LIFE OF A PROJECT ENGINEER
Being a project engineer is not a very easy job. Most of the people think that a project engineer job is very interesting and adventurous. You learn a lot as compared to other fields. If you work in a project you come to know the work very deep, you become more knowledgeful and your chance of getting a better job with high paid salary are more than others. Yes they are right, but they probably don’t know the other facts of the job. My topic is to bring in front of all the same facts which I think everyone should know.
Being project engineer you get to work on different types of projects and different atmosphere which make work more interesting. You get to learn more as you face different problems on site and the work pressure is high. You have to complete the work within the target date. If the target is not completed and the work gets extended then many types of commercial and technical problems start coming which ultimately results in increase of estimated project cost which is loss to both side i.e. customer/client and the company which is executing the project.
Mind you the work is very hectic and you have to be perfect in your job because you are giving a fresh start to the job, what I mean to say is that you are going to start a job (i.e.machine/process/industry/etc. ) or whatever the nature of job is for the first time and if anything goes wrong you are responsible for it. Many questions can be raised that what is the reason for failure because most of the time we use the new equipments, machinery, material and if it is not working in the first attempt then how it going to work in future or for the long time specially when everything becomes old or used.
Many new types of problems come in your way and are challenging too. Most of the time you face a problem which you come to know for the first time in your career. As you are on site you are many times it is not possible to contact the other person for help.
Below are the given points which is a real picture of a life of a project engineer.
1. When you reach on site nothing is ready. You have to start.
2. Many times you have to go to remote areas.
3. You have to face problems related to food, shelter and medium of communications as well.
4. Sometimes clients are not cooperative.
5. People you get to work with are very contrasting in nature. Most of the time you have to handle illiterate or low grade manpower. You also get unskilled people to work with.
6. Un hygienic conditions and unhealthy atmosphere.
7. Shortage of funds, manpower and material. You have to wait till the material comes at the site and your work gets hampered due to it.
8. You have to stay away from home for a long time. Also you sometimes have to go to consecutive sites.
9. Most of the time you have to work overtime for hours to complete the job within target.
10. Safety is the most important thing. Safety of your own and the people you are working with.
Now I think after reading this people will start thinking in a different way.
The field of project engineer is for those who are willing for a challenging career in any field. If you are willing to become a project engineer please be ready for the challenging future.
